Description

Teacher Registration Page for Core Element's 2016 Summer STEM Camp

Core Element Summer STEM Camps for 2016 will offer students and teachers the opportunity to grow STEM skills and knowledge and become more aware of career opportunities in a variety of STEM fields including, but not limited to Engineering and Computer Sciences. Participants can expect a fun and busy week which offers “hands-on” STEM learning, team building and critical skills in reasoning and analytical thinking that will offer students important career skills.

All camps are 5 days each and run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Each session has a $350 fee with a $25 non-refundable deposit required at time of registration.

Teacher will attend as learners along with our campers so that you experience first had the student activities, can interact with the students as they learn, and observe the students as they work through the same programming and other issues that might impact students in your classrooms.

This year's camp will have three one-week sessions to choose from:

  1. Jr. STEM Camp
  2. Introduction to LEGO EV3 Robotics
  3. Advanced Robotics

Jr. STEM Camp NEW!!

July 11-15, 2016

Ages 7-9

Campers will utilize three different STEM applications to introduce engineering and programming skills and to develop teamwork and critical-thinking skills.

1. WEDO™ Robotics

Campers will use LEGO™ WEDO robotics kits to explore robotics while they build working models that incorporate working motors and sensors; program their models to complete specific tasks; and explore theme-based activities while developing their problem solving and critical thinking skills.

2. littleBits

Campers will explore electronics, circuits and creative design with littleBits electronic modules. The littleBits platform of electronic building blocks is comprised of color-coded electronic modules for specific functions (like motion, lights, sound, sensors, and internet connectivity) that snap together to make larger circuits. Campers will engage in projects which develop STEM literacy and critical thinking skills, and foster creativity.

3. Makey Makey

Makey Makey is an ingeniously simple way of introducing students to circuits and electronics. Using the basic Makey Makey components, campers will use the Makey Makey circuit board and alligator clips to connect the board to everyday objects to explore ways to transform almost anything into a computer input device while learning basics about electricity.

Introduction to Robotics

July 18-22, 2016

Ages 10-13

Campers will learn how to build and program autonomous robots using LEGO™ EV3™ robots and MINDSTORMS Education Software. Participants in this weeklong session will get instruction and hands-on practice with activities that will allow them to build and program robots. Participants will get information, tips and ideas on how to enhance their team competition experiences. Campers work in small teams to promote FIRST© Lego League’s signature set of Core Values.

Advanced Robotics NEW!!

July 25-29, 2016

This camp is designed for middle school students who have prior robotics experience either through previous Core Element Summer STEM Camps, other summer robotics camps, or participation on a FIRST Lego League team.

Campers will develop and refine techniques to take their robotic skills to the next level. Planned activities help them to learn how to develop more complex attachments to complete missions, improve the use of motors and sensors, and refine programming skills to complete missions more creatively, efficiently and quickly. Campers will develop teamwork skill as they explore methods to problem-solve best approaches to mission tasks and to design and program better ways to complete those tasks.

STEM Career Explorations

All Core Element Summer STEM camps provide an opportunity for students to explore careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields and to learn about how math and science proficiency is increasingly a critical skill for current and future jobs. It is becoming increasingly apparent that science and math proficiency are the new “must-haves” for jobs outside of the usual STEM fields including positions in the hospitality, construction and services sectors.

Meet with STEM professionals to:

  • Explore STEM career possibilities;
  • Gain resources in creating mentor relationships;

  • Learn how to equate interest in math or science into possible career opportunities;

  • Learn general job requirements for a specific career path;

  • Learn more about careers with an opportunity for financial growth;

  • Gain a better understanding of scope and variety of career possibilities within the same business or field.
